Hainan Medical University is located in Haikou, the provincial capital of Hainan Province, a tropical coastal city known as the “Coconut City”, formerly known as HaiQiang Medical Technology School founded in 1947 and the private Hainan University Medical College founded in 1948. The university now has three campuses: Chengxi (main campus), Guilinyang (new campus), and Longhua, covering an area of 1416.71 acres. Adhering to the motto of “virtue, rigor, erudition, harmony,” the university continues to promote the spirit of “self-improvement, unity, and vigor,” and has built a six-in-one medical education system that integrates “teaching-clinic-research-international cooperation-social service-cultural heritage.” It has cultivated more than 70,000 high-quality medical and health talents for the country. It is the first batch of national pilot universities for the excellent doctor education and training program, the first batch of comprehensive reform pilot universities of the Ministry of Education, the construction unit of high level university of Hainan Province, the leading unit of National Emergency Medical Rescue Team (Hainan), and has fully embarked on a new era of independently cultivating high-level medical talents in Hainan.

The university has established a comprehensive and multi-level talent cultivation system that covers full-time undergraduate and postgraduate (master’s and doctoral) education, international student education, adult education, and continuing education. Currently, there are 15,340 full-time students, including 12,207 undergraduates (with 633 international students) and 1,760 master’s and doctoral students. Students have won multiple national level awards, including the first prize in innovation and entrepreneurship for pharmaceutical and traditional Chinese medicine college students, as well as the China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling, the National Computer Design Competition for College Students, the National Life Science Competition, and the Inter-Medical School Physiology Quiz,IMSPQ in China.The university has a faculty and medical staff of 11,834, including 1,100 full-time teachers. Among them, there are 749 at the main campus, with 479 holding senior professional technical titles, 163 professors, and nearly 51.27% with doctoral degrees. It has 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 Chang Jiang Scholar, 7 national candidates of “100 million talents project”, 4 national outstanding teachers, and 1 famous teacher of traditional Chinese medicine,5 selected by the Ministry of Education for the “New Century Excellent Talent Support Program” and 15 Hainan Province’s “Double Hundred Talents Team.”

The university offers 36 undergraduate majors in 4 disciplines, including medicine, science, and management, and has 5 national first-class undergraduate majors, 2 national specialties, 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 1 national clinical teaching training demonstration center.The university has 3 of the largest tertiary A-level directly affiliated hospitals in the province, with a total of 7,020 open beds. The annual number of outpatient and emergency patients was 5.8809 million, and the number of discharged patients was 257,300, accounting for 12.64% and 21.13% of the total in the province, respectively. This has made significant contributions to Hainan Province’s efforts to prevent major illnesses from leaving the island and clinical teaching.Additionally, it has 10 non-affiliated affiliated hospitals, 12 teaching hospitals, and 2 cooperative disease control centers, providing strong support for clinical teaching. It has 15 national clinical key specialties and 7 provincial key disciplines. Clinical medicine ranks in the top 5‰ of ESI disciplines, and pharmacology and toxicology rank in the top 1% of ESI disciplines. Currently, there are 5 first-level doctoral degree programs in clinical medicine, 5 master degree programs in basic medicine, clinical medicine, pharmacy, traditional Chinese medicine and biology, and 5 professional master degree programs in clinical medicine, public health, nursing, pharmacy and stomatology.

Notes:
In accordance with relevant Chinese laws and regulations, international students are required to live in the university dormitories during the first year. From the second year onward, students may apply to live off campus according to relevant management regulations.
